Barcelona hit as Tottenham extend Son’s contract

Tottenham have responded to reports linking captain Son Heung-min with Barcelona by triggering a clause in his contract that ties him to the club until 2026.

Son’s current contract, signed in 2021, was for four years but contained an option for Spurs to extend it by 12 months, which they did to avoid losing the 32-year-old on a free transfer in the summer.

The South Korean’s potential availability has reportedly caught the attention of Barcelona, who are looking for cut-price options given their financial woes.

The Liga club were also thought to be attracted to Son given his popularity in the Far East and the potential commercial opportunities they would bring him.

Son signed for Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen with the club describing him this morning as a “modern day great”.

He has made 431 appearances for the club, scoring 169 goals – the fourth most in Spurs’ history.

A four-time Asian Player of the Year, Son won the 2021/22 Premier League Golden Boot alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah after scoring 23 times.
