“They’ve seen me go through a lot, but they haven’t seen me express a lot of pain that usually a parent hides from a child,” Jolie, 49, said. BBC News to Maddox, 23, and Pax, 21, in an interview published Wednesday, Dec. 18. “So they were there to witness it, but afterwards we would hug each other or they would bring me cups of tea. “
Jolie plays a famous opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic, which was released in select theaters on November 27 and is now streaming on Netflix. Callas, who died aged 53 in 1977, faced her share of struggles and scandals over the course of her career, including vision problems, vocal decline and a high-profile affair with a shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
Jolie, whose contentious separation from ex-husband Brad Pitt played out in the public eye, explained how she connected with Callas during a press conference in August promoting the film.
“Well, there’s a lot of things I’m not going to say in this room that you probably know or guess,” the actress said. “I think the way I connected with her might be a surprise – (it was) probably that part of her that is extremely soft and there’s no place in the world for her to be as soft as she really was and as emotional open as she really was. I share her vulnerability more than anything.

In addition to Maddox and Pax, Jolie shares Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 16, with Pitt, 61. Maria director Pablo Laraine told BBC News that Pax and Maddox were “very busy” and “good professionals” on set. Jolie shared that Pax recorded some of her vocal workouts for Mariahearing her “early terrible days”. She trained for about seven months to sing for the film, which features Jolie’s voice mixed with original recordings by Callas.
“I’m actually quite shy about singing,” Jolie admitted. “That was probably one of the areas in my life where I was hesitant.”
The Oscar winner noted that she’s glad her sons can watch her tackle something outside her comfort zone.
“It’s always good for your kids to watch your mom not do something easily, but cursing and fighting and failing and having to try again,” she said. “One of the greatest privileges of being an actor is that you’re often supported by a team to try something and explore something you’ve never done, and that was certainly the biggest challenge.”
