Belize, adjacent to the Caribbean Sea, is a popular destination for American tourists, although the American government warns its citizens to be careful in the country. The US Department of Foreign Affairs contains a travel advice for American citizens in Belize on its website.
“Violent crime – such as sexual abuse, house invasions, armed robberies and murder – are common, even during the day and in tourist areas,” the website warns. “A significant part of the violent crime is gang -related.”

The warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs applies to the entire country of Belize, although it advises visitors to avoid specifically Belize City, which is approximately 35 miles south of San Pedro.
“Due to a high crime, travelers are advised to be careful while traveling to the south side of Belize City,” says the warning. “Local police miss the means and training to respond effectively to serious crimes.”
