A 72-year-old man who suffered from “several strokes 300 miles offshore from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii” on board a cruise ship was recovering last week after he had fled to a hospital, the American Coast Guard (USCG) announced.
Video of the salvation shows a coast guard fidevac -helicopter that floats over the Holland America Line’s Koningsdam Ship On Thursday, before it reduced a basket for the man to go in before it was hoisted and brought to Honolulu’s Queen’s Medical Center.
Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu received a notification the day before that the cruise passenger had several strokes, and a flight surgeon advised that he was a fellow invact within 20 hours, the USCG said in a press release.
The next morning, an HC-130 Hercules Airplane crew and an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter Crew met Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point with the cruise ship about 60 miles south of Honolulu.

“By combining the skills of our crews and the specialized possibilities of our plane, we can respond to emergency situations in the large Pacific region,” Lieutenant CMDR. John Stockton, HC-130 Hercules Aircander Commander at Air Station Barbers Point, said in a statement. “Teamwork is crucial for METEVACS, who are one of the most time-sensitive and high-stakes missions that we are accepting.”
