Adelaide Pitch curator prepares seamer-friendly pitch for India vs Australia pink-ball Test

Adelaide Oval groundskeeper Damian Hough has set the stage for a thrilling contest in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Hough revealed that a turf cover of even 6mm has been prepared for the purpose, which will surely benefit the seamers. With rain expected on Day 1, the conditions could strongly favor the bowlers, especially under lights.

“History shows that it’s difficult to bat under the lights in Adelaide. The pitch will have 6mm grass. We’re trying to create a stadium that encourages a good race,” Hough told reporters.

Rain to disrupt Day 1 of Adelaide Test?

Hough reiterated that the weather could be a factor, and on December 6 with an 88% chance of rain, the team to beat the first game would be unlucky. The wet conditions along with the natural movement of the ball could play a nightmare for the batters who settle.

“The ball circling has nothing to do with the pitch. Under the right conditions, in the right weather, the ball will move,” Hough added.

Lessons from the latest pink ball clash

Adelaide Oval has seen dramatic pink-ball encounters in the past. During the 2020-21 series, India were bowled out for their lowest ever Test score—36—in the second innings at this ground. Despite the strong lead of the first participations, where Virat Kohli74 stood out, India couldn’t last Australiahis rhythm attack.

Josh Hazlewood‘s five-door pull and Pat CumminsThe four overs dismantled India in just 21.2 overs, paving the way for Australia’s eight-wicket win. The Indian bowlers were lethal in the first innings, bundling Australia out for 191, but conditions turned sharply against the visitors in the second innings.

Hough emphasized that while the surface offers something for tailors, it remains a balanced pitch.
The pitch didn’t play a part in the test match which was completed in 3 days last time India was here. I thought it was very good bowling from Australia. As long as there’s something in it for all aspects of the game I’m happy, I just want a good match,” he said.
