Archaeologists have revealed a 400-year-old burial vault after following a long-lost staircase.
The staircase was found in the Church of Saint Philibert in Dijon, France.
According to the Romanesque church, the Romanesque church dates from the second half of the 12th century French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap).

“A vault has been identified in the transept, probably from the 15th-16th century. In it are the deceased, children and adultsare buried in coffins, with the bones of each individual pushed aside to make room for the last deceased,” according to an Inrap press release.

The deceased consisted mainly of adults, dressed in shrouds, placed in wooden coffins.
“Very few objects were found in the graves, apart from rare coins and two rosaries“, the press release said.

Archeology teams from Inrap discovered that the foundation of the vault is approximately 3 meters deep, and that the discovered tombs date from the 11th to 13th centuries.

Six sarcophagi were also excavated.

According to The Institutional Repository for the University of Notre Dame (CleanND).
“During the Revolution, the church was abandoned in 1795. It was given to the city, which in 1825 razed the two chapels and the apse of the church to expand the current Rue des Vieilles-Ovens,” research shows on CurateND.
