Elton John has battled several health issues throughout his legendary music career, from battling addiction to a secret battle with cancer. “I am a survivor. I’ve been through a lot,” he told Variety in a March 2019 interview. “Life is full of traps, even when you’re sober. Now I can handle them because (…)

“To my husband, who has been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to a lot of the previews…it’s hard for me to watch him, but I love hearing him and he sounded good tonight. Thank you for coming,” he told the crowd.

In November, John shared during an interview with Good morning Americais Robin Roberts that he lost the sight in his right eye during the summer.

“I had an infection in the south of France,” he said. “It’s been four months since I’ve been out of sight, and my left eye isn’t the best.”

John said he was “hopeful and encouraged” that he would eventually be okay.

“I’m kind of stuck right now,” he added, noting that he’s not sure if “going in the studio and recording” music is possible right now.

“For starters, I don’t see any text. We’re taking the initiative to try and improve it, but that’s what we’re concentrating on at the moment,” John explained. “It’s never lucky to have something like this happen. I’m a bit confused and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”

John first described his eye problems in a statement via Instagram in early September.

“Over the summer I had a severe eye infection which unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” the singer said. “I am healing, but it is an extremely slow process and it will take some time for vision to return to the affected eye.”

“I’ve had a quiet summer recovering at home and feel positive about the progress I’ve made in my healing and recovery so far,” he continued, before signing the letter “with love and gratitude.”
