Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has described a muscle injury suffered in Sunday’s win over Aston Villa as “nothing serious” but is still set to miss a number of games.
Fofana limped off 59 minutes into the game at Stamford Bridge, to be replaced by Benoit Badiashile. The former Leicester City centre-back has been a key part of Chelsea’s revival under Enzo Maresca this season, forming a regular partnership with Levi Colwell.
But seeing him leave the field early at the weekend was an understandable concern for fans – a player whose first two years in Chelsea were plagued by injuries, including all of 2023/24.
Speaking on social media, Fofana himself described it as: “A slight warning of the muscles, as often happens after major injuries, nothing serious, the body adapts.”
Maresca’s assessment of the situation was a little more serious, given that even a relatively short absence of somewhere between three and five weeks could mean missing many games at the busiest time of the football calendar.
“Unfortunately it’s bad news. It’s a hamstring problem and things like that usually require at least three, four or five weeks, but right now that means we’re missing him for ten or 12 games,” Maresca explained during the post of. match press conference.
“The way he played, it’s a big loss for us, but we have more players and we’ll try to find a solution. It’s a big loss because he’s doing fantastic, but it’s normal when you play so many games unfortunately. Fortunately, he’s the first his injury this season and we will find a solution.”
In the rest of December alone, Chelsea face eight games Premier League and Conference League, including an away trip to Kazakhstan. The Blues face five more games in January, with the Premier League leaving the winter break this season.
