‘Hell no’: House Dems erupt over GOP spending deal

House Democrats are opposing the latest version of a spending plan released by the president on Thursday Mike Johnson.

“The Musk-Johnson proposal is not serious, it is laughable. Extreme MAGA Republicans are driving us toward a government shutdown,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., indicated that Democratic leaders would rally their members to vote “no” on the deal.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., lamented that the latest deal was blown up by opposition from conservatives, with input from DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Everyone agreed with it,” he said, “and then it got blown up by Elon Musk, who has apparently become the fourth branch of government. And that’s just an intolerable way to act.”

“Democrats are going to try to figure out how to save the public good from the wreckage that was just thrown up.”

Chants of “hell no” could be heard in the room where Democrats were meeting after the text of the bill was released.

The latest continuing resolution, or CR, would extend current government funding levels by three months and also suspend the debt limit for two years, something President-elect Trump has demanded.

It comes after the original 1,500-page CR faced opposition from the right over policy and rider funding.

House lawmakers could vote on the new bill as early as Thursday evening.

It is not immediately clear whether the new deal will go through. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who also led opposition to the original bill, also denounced the new deal.

“More debt. More government. Increase the credit card by $4 trillion without any cuts and cuts. A HARD NO,” Roy wrote on X.

Of $36 trillion in debt and a $1.8 trillion deficit by 2024, some conservatives oppose a CR, which pushes the funding deadline to March and keeps spending entirely at 2024 levels.

Without the votes of conservative Republicans, Johnson will have to rely on Democrats to get the spending legislation through the House of Representatives.

Trump praised the deal minutes after Fox News Digital reported its contents.

The deal also includes aid to farmers and about $110 billion in emergency aid for Americans affected by Storms Helene and Milton.

It would also include certain health care benefits, minus the reforms to the Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) system that some Republicans and Democrats pushed for — but others strongly opposed.

Trump said of the deal: “Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have reached a very good deal for the American people. The newly negotiated American Relief Act of 2024 will keep the government open, fund and provide relief to our Big Farmers and others. for those hit hard by the devastating hurricanes.”

“All Republicans, and even Democrats, must do what is best for our country and vote ‘YES’ on this bill tonight!” he wrote.

Shortly after Fox News Digital’s report, House leaders released the legislative text of the bill. It was approximately 116 pages, a far cry from their original legislation of 1,547 pages.

House Democrats are opposing the latest version of a spending plan released Thursday by Speaker Mike Johnson.

It comes after conservatives led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy torpedoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s initial funding plan on Wednesday, raising fears of a partial government shutdown just before the holidays.

Republican hardliners were outraged by what they saw as unrelated measures and policymakers added to the bill at the last minute.

Republicans in the House of Representatives began negotiations on a “clean” bill known as a continuing resolution (CR), but that was also upended when Trump urged GOP lawmakers to combine a CR with action on the debt limit area – which was expected to be a contentious battle in the US. the first half of next year.

Musk and Ramaswamy also lent his voice to the fight, with Musk calling on any Republican who supported the deal to lose their seats in the House of Representatives.

In addition to preventing a partial government shutdown through March 14, the bill also included a provision to allow the revitalization of the RFK Stadium in Washington, DC; permits to sell ethanol fuel year-round; and the first pay increase for lawmakers since 2009 — both measures not included in the latest deal.
