The accusatory woman Jay Z of rape came forward to address the inconsistencies in her claims.
“You always have to fight for what happened to you,” the unidentified woman, identified in legal documents as Jane Doe, said in an interview with NBC News posted on Friday, December 13th. “You always have to stand up for yourself and be a voice for yourself. You should never let what someone else has done ruin or rule your life. I just hope that I can give others the strength to come forward like I came forward.”
In a civil suit filed against Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) and Sean “Diddy” Combs on December 8, Doe claimed she was invited to an afterparty at the 2000 MTV Music Video Awards. by a driver claiming to work for Diddy. The woman, who is 13 years old at the time of alleged incidentclaims she was given a drink that she says was drugged. (The suit was originally filed on Nov. 18, naming only Diddy, and was refiled the following month by lawyer Tony Busby including Jay-Z.)
Doe claims she went to find an empty break room when Diddy, Jay-Z and an unnamed celebrity walked in. Doe claims that Diddy “threw her on the bed” and Jay-Z removed her clothes and held her down while raping her while Diddy and the star looked on.
“Jay-Z comes and holds me. I’m starting to try to push back,” she told NBC News on Friday. “He puts his hand over my mouth, tells me to stop, stop the bullshit, and then rapes me like he’s overpowered me.”
Jay-Z and Diddy, both 55, furious denied the allegations.
“These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!! Anyone who would commit a crime like this against a minor should be locked up, don’t you agree?” Jay-Z said in a statement to Us Weekly after news of the case broke. “These alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case.” (Jay-Z’s statement was also shared via Roc Nation’s official Instagram account.)
After the alleged incident, Doe ran away from home and went to a nearby gas station to call her father to pick her up.
“I was upset and the guy at the gas station could tell I was obviously upset and let me use the phone. I called my father because he was the only person I (had) trusted at the time. I told him I was confused and needed a ride home,’ she recalled outside the exit. “We went home in silence. He didn’t ask me what happened. He didn’t ask me what I was doing or where I was.”
In addition to Jay-Z and Diddy insisting the incident never happened, Doe’s father spoke to NBC News on Thursday, Dec. 12, saying he doesn’t remember picking up his daughter that night at the gas station, which is about five hours away from their home. Doe, for his part, stands by his claims.
“There are a lot of things, and these are things that we constantly argue about, something that he said or did in New York at that time, he just doesn’t remember,” she said Friday. “It actually causes a lot of fighting sometimes in the household.”
Doe also claims to have spoken to Joel and Benji Madden during the afterparty, but the Good Charlotte band members said they were not in attendance as they were on tour at the time. Doe explained that other faces at the event were not so clear.
“Honestly, what’s most clear is what happened to me and (the path) I took to what happened to me. Not all the faces out there are that clear,” she said. “So I made some mistakes. I may have made an identification mistake.
There were also inconsistencies in Doe’s description of the house where the incident allegedly occurred. Doe’s lawyer and his team are trying to confirm the location.
Doe said she never told anyone about the alleged assault before the lawsuit.
“Even if someone found out, who would believe me?” she told NBC News. “I mean, it was two celebrities’ word against mine.”
