Woman arrested for trying to smuggle 22 pounds of meth wrapped as a Christmas gift in a carry-on bag


Vigilant officers at a New Zealand airport unpacked $2 million worth of methamphetamine, wrapped as Christmas presents Canadian woman tried to hide.

The woman, 29, arrived at Auckland International Airport New Zealand on a flight from Vancouver on December 8 with the illegal drugs in her carry-on luggage, according to a edition from New Zealand Customs.

Upon landing, officers questioned the woman and searched her carry-on luggage, discovering more than 22 pounds. of methamphetamine hidden under brightly colored wrapping paper with snowflakes.

Officials say the Canadian citizen’s bag contained the equivalent of more than $2 million worth of illegal drugs.

Auckland Airport Manager Paul Williams called the incident a “classic attempt by transnational organized crime groups” to exploit the busy crowd travel season.

“But a busy airport doesn’t mean customs isn’t focused on or paying attention to anyone who may pose a drug risk,” Williams said in a statement. ‘The airport teams are made up of vigilant officers who focus on catching those who try to cause harm New Zealand.”

The woman has since appeared in the District Court on charges of importation and possession for the supply of a Class A controlled drug, officers noted.

“There is more collaboration with our Canadian partners to drive disruption criminal gangs and the importation of drugs, including through the flow of passengers,” Williams told Fox News Digital in an email. “As this is part of an ongoing investigation, Customs does not wish to release any further information for operational reasons.”

Authorities say the woman has been taken into custody.
