There are old threats, new threats and growing threats to America that must be addressed as quickly as possible. We are playing Russian roulette with our national security if we delay securing our broken border.
More than 200 Americans die every day from a fentanyl overdose. That’s the equivalent of another attack on September 11, almost every two weeks, because of how illegal drugs are cross our border. Every week we delay is a death sentence for thousands of Americans.
The shameful withdrawal from Afghanistan has emboldened terrorist organizations around the world. Now with the unrest in Syria, the jihadist groups that threaten America are growing in capacity and number. While the recent collapse of the Assad regime in Syria was a major loss for Russia and Iran, the chaos it brings to the region could pose a direct threat to the United States.

The cartels are focused on bringing people to America, and they will take anyone’s money – including terrorists. The terrorist groups taking over Syria – most of which the United States wants to eliminate – are now in a new position of power. If any of these terrorists, ISIS or otherwise, wanted to infiltrate our country, it would simply require payment to a money-hungry cartel.
Over the past four years, there have been 1.7 million encounters at the southern border with illegal immigrants from “special interest countries”—countries that DHS has identified as posing the greatest national security and counterintelligence threats to the U.S.—and 687 encounters with immigrants at the border. terror watchlist. If our border crisis is allowed to continue, any number of terrorists could find their way into America and we would be none the wiser.

It is imperative that we strengthen our national security. The way to do this is to secure our broken border, increase the number of ICE agents to deport criminals and gang members, increase the number of sleeping spaces in detention centers so we don’t have to release illegal immigrants into the United States . building the wall and deploying technology that will give us 24/7 situational awareness at the border.

But the top priority for the Senate Budget Committee – and the Trump Administration – is securing our southern border and helping the Defense Department combat growing threats before it’s too late. I urge every member of the House of Representatives and the Senate to receive an intelligence briefing on the threats coming our way.
We are living on borrowed time given the threats that are increasing around the world. If we fail to secure our fractured borders in this time of great danger, the United States will likely fall victim to a national security catastrophe.
