Without naming names, Mendes admitted to past relationship drama in an appearance on the Thursday, Dec. 12 episode of John MayerThe SiriusXM show “How’s Life?”
“So I’m with someone, (and) two days before I go hang out with my ex, (I) express that I’m going to hang out with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” said the musician, 26 in video preview.
Mendes now believes that instead of giving two days’ notice, he should have given her “two weeks” notice.
“Is there anything in all of this where you could say, ‘Yeah, I played that wrong?'” Mayer, 47, asked his guest.
In response, Mendes shared his biggest life lesson: “No one gets out of this life without being hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”
Mendez and Cabello, 27, from 2019 to 2021 after years of friendship. In February 2023 Mendes was first spotted with Carpenter25, and this March the two attended the Vanity Fair The Oscars party separately. Entertainment tonight reported to be an item but Mendes denied that she was dating Carpenter.
Mendes subsequently rekindled her relationship with Cabello after they were seen kissing at Coachella in April 2023 Mendes and Cabello in the end forever apart in June 2023, with an exclusive source telling Us Weekly at the time, it was Cabello who “decided to end things” and Mendes was “very upset” that they couldn’t make him work.
Carpenter’s fans noticed obvious nods to the situation on her latest album Short and sweet. On the one hand, the title refers to “some of those relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had and affected me the most,” she told Apple Music Zane Lowe.
The lyrics of the song “Coincidence” are directed at a man who got back together with his ex shortly after a breakup.
“The second I laid my head on your chest / She knew she had a real sixth sense,” Carpenter sang. “Now her name comes up once, then she comes up twice / And without even being here, she’s back in your life / Now she’s in the same goddamn town on the same goddamn night.”
The music video for “Taste” fanned the flames with Jenna Ortega featuring the girlfriend of Carpenter’s ex-boyfriend.
The single sent a message to the ex’s new girlfriend with the lines: “I heard you’re back together and if it’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he kisses you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know that you will taste me too.”
In an awkward momentMendes performed at September’s MTV Video Music Awards, and soon after leaving the stage, Carpenter followed with a set that included “Taste” as well as her hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.”
