Brazilian President Lula in intensive care after surgery to drain a head hemorrhage, hospital says


Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in an intensive care unit after undergoing surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage, the Sirio-Lebanes Hospital said in a statement in the early hours of Tuesday.

The procedure was carried out after the 79-year-old leftist leader felt a headache that doctors said was the result of a fall at home in October.

The hospital said Lula, who had traveled from the capital Brasilia to be treated 1,000 kilometers south in Sao Paulo, is “well, under supervision in an ICU bed” after the bleed leaked.

Brazil presidency has not yet commented.

Lula a trip to canceled Russia for a BRICS summit after the accident, his office said at the time. It left him with a gash visible on the back of his head, just above his neck.

Sirio-Lebanes said a press conference will be held at 9 a.m. local time to discuss the operation.
