In the dynamic world of cricket, where talent meets opportunity, Venkatesh Iyer has emerged as an important figure after the recent one IPL 2025 Grand Auction. The handyman was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering INR 23.75 crore, making him the fourth most expensive player in IPL history. This monumental moment not only highlights his individual prowess but also highlights the strategic decisions franchises make in the ever-competitive landscape of T20 cricket.
A relationship of mutual faith between Venkatesh Iyer and KKR
Ahead of the auction, Iyer expressed a deep desire to remain with KKR, the franchise that had nurtured his talent since his debut in 2021. In talks with the KKR management, he was candid about his feelings, stating that he would be disappointed if they didn’t choose him again.
CEO of KKR Venky Mysore he later confirmed this sentiment, revealing that Iyer’s passion for the team played a key role in their bid strategy.
“I had a chat with him before the bookings were announced. He was very clear when he told me that “we won’t be able to keep you because of the retention rules” and not because they didn’t want me at KKR. I told him, ‘Sir, if you have the option, and if you can, please do whatever you can to bring me back to KKR.’ It kind of worked, didn’t it? This shows how much he trusts and believes in me. I would really like to thank him. Over the years, we have built a wonderful relationship. I really felt really grateful” Iyer told the Indian Express, showing his commitment to the franchise that had become synonymous with his cricketing identity.

The bidding war for Iyer
The auction itself saw a fierce bidding war between KKR and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Both teams recognized Iyer’s potential and contributions, leading to a dramatic escalation of offers.
“Obviously, when you see the oar rising for you, you never want the oar to stop rising. But after a period of time, I really felt that both RCB and KKR were pushing for me. I think it shows how much confidence KKR have in me. I was surprised, but at the same time extremely happy. To be honest, I wanted to play for KKR. If it were in my hands, I would love to be held. But that didn’t happen. I am very happy to be back at KKR“, he added and reflected on the experience.
In the end, KKR emerged victorious, underlining their faith in Iyer’s potential as a player.
Iyer on KKR’s leadership
With such a significant investment in him, speculations arose about Iyer’s possible role as captain IPL 2025. While some reports state that veteran Ajinkya Rahane can take the reins, Iyer’s comments indicate his readiness to embrace leadership responsibilities.
“I have always maintained that I want to be a leader in whatever line-up I step into, be it Madhya Pradesh, an IPL team, or even the Indian team. Being a leader, you want to contribute with your ideas, with your suggestions. You don’t really need the captain tag for this. So I always want to be a leader in the locker room. And if the captaincy comes my way, it will be an honor to lead such a storied franchise. Let’s see what’s in store for me,” said Iyer, stressing that leadership goes beyond titles and is about contributing positively to team dynamics.
The all-rounder’s performance for KKR
Iyer’s performance during the IPL 2024 season further enhanced his value as an all-rounder. He scored 370 runs at an impressive average of 46.25 and showed his ability to handle pressure with a strike rate of over 158. His contributions were instrumental in KKR’s title campaign, including a memorable century against Mumbai Indians (MI). His consistent performances have made him a cornerstone of KKR’s strategy going forward.
