Biden pardons Hunter before leaving the Oval Office

President Biden forgave his son, Hunter Biden, after the first son was convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year.

The White House announced this on Sunday evening.

“Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter,” Biden wrote in a statement. “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Department of Justice’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I watched my son be selectively and unjustly prosecuted.”

“Without aggravating factors such as use in a crime, multiple purchases or purchasing a gun as a straw buyer, people are almost never charged with a misdemeanor charge solely because of the way they filled out a gun form,” the statement said. “Those who paid their taxes late due to serious addictions, but then paid them back with interest and penalties, typically receive non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.”

Hunter’s attorneys did not dispute the first son’s long history of substance abuse at trial, which included alcohol addiction. The defense instead argued that Biden did not consider himself an active drug addict on the day Biden purchased the Cobra Colt .38, citing the first son’s time in rehab prior to the October 2018 purchase .

However, prosecutors argued that Biden was addicted to crack cocaine before, during and after he bought the gun.
