England Pacer Gus Atkinson has etched his name into the history books. On day 2 of the 2nd test against New Zealand he took his maiden test hat-trick. The New Zealand batsman collapsed at Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Atkinson became the first bowler in 94 years of Test cricket at the ground to take a maiden Test hat-trick. His brilliant effort also made him the 14th England bowler to achieve this milestone. He is the fourth bowler to do so against New Zealand. He joined Moeen Ali and Stuart board from England to make this extraordinary claim.

Atkinson made history in the 35th over. Nathan Smith fell after scoring 14 runs and bowling a low delivery. On the very next ball, Matt Henry departed for a golden duck. At Guly, Ben Duckett was caught out. And finally, Tim Souththe last Kiwi batting, was trapped LBW on review and the rest is history.

The New Zealand team bowled out for just 125 runs. England’s speed attack dominated the Kiwis. While Atkinson led the charge with his square wire. Brydon Carse was instrumental by claiming four wickets as well. Chris Woakes and skipper Ben Stokes also took 1 wicket.

With England in the lead, New Zealand now face an uphill task to stay competitive and avoid elimination from the final match of the World Test Championship.

Trial Champions Participation is at stake

If New Zealand lose the second Test, they will effectively be out of final contention for the 2023-2025 World Test Championship (WTC). They are fifth in the table at the moment with a winning percentage of 47.92.

New Zealand is ruled by England. Despite achieving a historic white wash Indian terrain. This is their last series of tests in the WTC cycle.
