Judge blocks Trump’s EPA of terminating $ 14 billion in ‘Green Bank’ subsidies after accusations of fraud

On Tuesday, a federal court blocked the Environmental Protection Agency of the termination of $ 14 billion in subsidies assigned to three climate groups by the BIDEN administration.

Judge Tonya Chutkan of the American district ruled that the ‘vague and non -under -built claims of fraud of the federal government are insufficient’. The order prevents the EPA from terminating the subsidy program, which was a total of $ 20 billion. The judge also blocked Citibank, which holds the money on behalf of EPA, to transfer it to the government or someone else.

EPA manager Lee rarin Claimed that the recipients of subsidies are concerned with maladministration, fraud and self -handling in the announcement that he was frozen and moved to end the subsidies, but the judge said that the allegations of rarin were insufficient.

“At the moment, EPA covers have not sufficiently explained why unilateral termination of the subsidy prices of claimants was a rational precursor for assessing” The Green Bank Program, Chutkan wrote.

The recipients of the subsidy have sued the EPA, rarer and Citibank, with the argument that they had illegally refused access to $ 14 billion granted last year via the greenhouse gas reduction fund, usually referred to as a “green bank”. The program, which consisted of two initiatives worth $ 14 billion and $ 6 billion respectively, was Approved by the congress Under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act to support clean energy and climate -friendly projects.

Three groups – Climate United, the Coalition for Green Capital and Power Forward Communities – said that the frozen subsidies prevented them from financing new projects and forcing them to dismiss staff. The groups said that the allegations of wrong -acting funds were merit.

The groups also asked Chutkan to order Citibank to loosen the bill, but the judge refused. The order only keeps the status quo as the case goes ahead.

Climate United received almost $ 7 billion, the Coalition for Green Capital won $ 5 billion and Power Forward Communities – a group linked to Democrat Stacey Abrams – received $ 2 billion.

Beth Bafford. CEO of Climate United, said the judge was “a step in the right direction.”

“In the coming weeks we will continue to work on a long -term solution with which we can invest in projects that provide energy savings, create jobs and stimulate American production in communities throughout the country,” said Bafford.

Redin said on Tuesday that the subsidies were granted “in a way that deliberately reduced EPA’s assets to supervise”, adding that he “will not rest before this hard -earned taxpayer dollars are returned to the American treasury.”

Rarin has described the subsidies as a “gold bar” scheme that is involved in conflicts of interest and potential fraud.

“Twenty billion of your tax dollars was parked at an external financial institution, in a deliberate attempt to limit the supervision of the government-out money by only eight pass-through, politically connected, unqualified and in some cases brand new NGOs,” said Zeldin previously posted on X.

Climate United argued that the termination was illegal, with the argument that the federal government had not identified proof of waste, fraud or abuse.
