Jo Ann Echelbarger, 73, was killed by a few pit bulls called Apollo and Echo, who were owned by suspects Susan and Adam Withers, on October 17. The horrible incident took place in the reserve in Ashton Village, a residential complex in Ashville, Ohio.

According to a lawsuit that was brought on behalf of Echelbarger’s family on 13 March, the deceased had only lived in the complex for a few months before she was murdered. The two pit bulls “ran around the common areas of the reserve and eventually attacked Jo Ann while she was peacefully gardening.”

“A part of Jo Ann’s damage was the extreme and seriously conscious physical and mental pain and the suffering she experienced in the moments before, during and after she had been malignant and prior to her death,” the submission described. “Part of this was caught on some of the most horrible videos you could ever imagine.”

The tragedy was worse by the lifelong of Echelbarger Fear of dogs, the lawsuit noted. The dogs were later killed by the police.

“The attack and last moments of Jo Ann’s life were particularly frightening because Jo Ann was afraid of dogs, because she was previously bitten by a dog as a child,” the court case said.

“In fact, the dogs were so aggressive and persistent in their threatening, violent and aggressive behavior that the police were forced to shoot and kill the dogs to end the fear,” the suit described. “And even after bullets had hit one of the dogs, it returned to Jo Ann and continued to attack before he walked back in the Witers’ house.”

According to the court case, the incident in October was not the first time that the dogs had fallen into trouble. The document mentions various violent or disruptive incidents involved – including an incident in October 2023 in which Apollo attacked a resident and killed their dogs.

The dogs of the Withers were reportedly ordered to leave the community in a judicial order of 11 September that was not enforced, according to the court case.

Three weeks before the death of Echelbarger, on 27 September, the police were called upon to see the dogs because “Echo and Apollo had taken the cocaine of Adam Witers.”

“These failures resulted in the death of a beautiful 73-year-old woman, mother and grandmother.”
