Howe on why Newcastle has “less emotion” … and what boss did to recover from 2023 defeat


The Newcastle Eddie Howe manager revealed that he was not “in an excellent position” after his side lost his 2023 EFL Cup final at Manchester United – but says the defeat is “irrelevant” as Magpies are preparing to face Liverpool at this season at Wembley Stadium (4.30pm).

More than three years after his appointment, Howe has a second chance to win Newcastle’s first big trophy from 1954/55 FA Cup and proceed somewhat to conquer his memories from the first final of his career, when his players scored two attempts at the goal and admitted to both goals.

“We haven’t returned to this game at all, really,” Howe said. “It’s almost irrelevant – the opportunity, yes, but the game itself and emotions and emotions (not).

“There was much less emotion and much less external noise. Hopefully this will help us in this game. I would say this is the biggest difference.”
