American Postmaster General Louis Dejoy has informed Members of the congress On Thursday he signed an agreement with the General Services Administration and the Department of Government Efficiency of Elon Musk to reduce 10,000 employees and billions of dollars from the Budget of the US post service.
In a letter to the congress, Dejoy regretted that the postal service has a “broken business model that was not financially sustainable without critically necessary and core change”.
“Repairing a broken organization that had experienced almost $ 100 billion in losses and was expected to lose another $ 200 billion, without a bankruptcy procedure, is a discouraging task,” Dejoy wrote. “Repairing a heavily legal and overly regulated organization such as massive, important, cherished, misunderstood and discussed as the Postal Service of the United States, with such a broken business model, is even more difficult.”
Doge will help USPS to tackle “major problems” at the desk of $ 78 billion a year, which has sometimes had trouble floating in recent years. The agreement is intended to help the postal service identify and achieve “further efficiency”.

USPS mentioned problems as mismanagement of the pension assets of the agency and the compensation program of the employees, as well as a series of legal requirements that the letter is described as “limiting normal business practice.”
“This is an effort that is tailored to our efforts, because although we have achieved a lot, there is much more to do,” Dejoy wrote.

Critics of the agreement fear negative effects of the cuts throughout America. Democratic American Rep. Gerald Connolly, from Virginia, who was sent the letter, said that turning the postal service to Doge would lead to it being undermined and privatized.

“The only thing that is worse for the post service than the ‘Delivery for America’ plan of DeJoy is to transfer the service to Elon Musk and Doge so that they can undermine it, privatize it and then benefit from the loss of Americans,” Said Connolly in a statement.
He added: “This capitulation will have catastrophic consequences for all Americans – especially those in the countryside and difficult to reach areas – who trust the postal service every day to deliver e -Mail, medicines, ballot papers and more. Reliable mail delivery cannot just be reserved for Maga supporters and Tesla -owners. ”
Doge and agencies cancel 200,000 federal credit cards
The National Association of Letter Carriers President Brian L. Renfroe said in a statement in response to Thursday that they welcome someone’s help in tackling some of the biggest problems of the agency, but was firmly against every movement to privatize the postal service.
“Common Sense solutions are what the post service needs, not privatization efforts that will threaten 640,000 jobs from post -employees, 7.9 million jobs that are linked to our work and the universal service on which every American trusts every day,” he said.
USPS currently employs around 640,000 employees who are responsible for supplying deliveries from inner cities to rural areas and even distant islands.

The service intends to cut 10,000 employees in the next 30 days through a voluntary program for early retirement, according to the letter.
The agency has previously announced plans to reduce its operating costs per year by more than $ 3.5 billion. And this is not the first time that thousands of employees have been cut. In 2021, the agency cut 30,000 employees.

Since the service that has been working as an independent entity since 1970 has difficulty balancing the books with the deterioration of first-class e-mail, the fighting of President Donald Trump and others has been privatized.
Last month, Trump said that he could place USPS under the control of the trade department in what a takeover of an executive power would be.
