Aziz, together with another child whose identity was not released, was placed in protective detention.

Weekly said he had the “privilege” to meet the victim’s family and said, “There was no dry eyes in the room.”

“This family has a long way for them. But our team is there for them. We will walk step by step with them while they navigate through this trip. We hope that they will find healing and hoping in the days, weeks, months and even years for them,” said Weekly.

“I could not be more proud of the work of our team; this case emphasizes the dedication of our officers to seek justice and to protect the most vulnerable. It is a reminder of the incredible difference that our work makes in the lives of those we serve. This reminds us why we do this work.”

Officials said that the investigation is still underway and that the authorities continue to collect information to fully resolve this case.

“This important development follows a long seven -year search,” said the American Marshal Enix Smith III for the eastern district of Louisiana in a statement. “I extend my sincere gratitude to all involved in the recovery effort, especially the authorities in Douglas County, Colorado for their fast and effective actions. John Bischoff III, Vice -President Missing Children Division for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) also shared an explanation of his gratitude for Khan’s safe return and the work of the law enforcement agencies.

“The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has worked closely with law enforcement and the Aziz family since his disappearance, always believing that he could be found,” said Bischoff.

“It can be difficult to get public attention in family commitments, but we knew that the national media was crucial – Aziz could have been somewhere.
