Because Fury’s old tricks won’t work against Usyk

Spencer Oliver thinks Tyson Fury should use it move which he had when he defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 when he faced Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch on December 21.

Poor mobility

Fury weighed a minute 247 pounds for his fight with Wladimir on November 28, 2015. He was 27 at the time, still young, and it was before he started having weight problems. After Gyspy King defeated Klitschko by a 12-round unanimous decision in that fight in Dusseldorf, Germany, his weight balloon to about 400 lbs.

Since then, Fury has never weighed anywhere near the 247 pounds he weighed in for his fight with Klitschko. It’s safe to say Fury will NEVER get back to that weight without it putting him in the hospital. Once a person gets as heavy as Fury was during his 2 1/2 year victory streak after the Wladimir fight, you never go back to what you were without looking sick.

One insurmountable obstacle preventing this strategy from working for former WBC heavyweight champion Fury is his weight. It has been reported that Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) is packing up to 270s to try and use his size to intimidate Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs), as he successfully did in his rematch with by Deontay Wilder on February 22, 2020.

Fury packed up to 273 pounds for this fight, using grappling and grappling tactics to subdue the lighter 231-lbs Wilder. Tyson enjoyed one 42-lb weight advantage in this match. That’s not why he won, though. Deontay looked confused and couldn’t adjust to Fury often blowing in to grab him by his bear-like hold to devour him.

Ring IQ deficit

Going heavier against Usyk won’t work nearly as well because it won’t allow Fury to grab him like Deontay and Wladimir did. Both fighters lacked the ring IQ that Usyk possesses to overcome Fury, who has repeatedly done the same thing in these fights.

Usyk is not stupid. He won’t allow Fury to duck after a punch, but he won’t move away or catch him with a shot while coming forward.

“If Tyson Fury can rediscover the drive he had during 2015 against Wladimir Klitschko, there are rumors that he could be a lot heavier for it,” said Spencer Oliver. talkSport Boxing on Fury coming in heavier for the rematch with Usyk on December 21.

“Is that going to be the undoing of him doing that? Because if he wants to bully him, I think you’re playing into Usyk’s hands.”

Fury’s obstacles to victory against Usyk

– Weight
– Lack of Ring IQ
– One dimensional game design: Mauling
– Poor mobility
– Age
– Fragile mandible: Punch resistance is gone
– Endurance issues
– No power

“Use that uppercut he did in the sixth round and take Usyk down,” Oliver said of what Fury should do against Usyk.
