January will help a lot in Bruges, says Emery

The director of Aston Villa Unai Emery says the new signatures of Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford will help them in the Champions League when they take over the Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Asensio scored four times in his last three appearances, while Rashford has been a creative force since he arrived at Manchester United.

The villa suffered a defeat in Bruges in November, going to a strange penalty of the second half, after Tyrone Mings took the ball from Emiliano Martinez’s kick.

Emery said: “We have added players with experience in Europe. They usually play at the highest level and will help us a lot, but we will see it.

“The process they do. Progressive adapting to us goes well and also improves – how we want to try and use our structure, defensively, aggressively.

“We are not going to get our goal only through individual players. We are going to get our goal collectively, building our structure as strong as possible.

“Then our individual players can show their ability. This is the challenge we have, it is my challenge, the challenge of the players and everyone has the goal, we hope that we can share together, get our goal for the next three months.”

Emery expects his players to produce a show in Belgium – and if they win over two legs, Villa will face either the PSG or Liverpool for the past eight.

Emery said: “When we played here, we didn’t compete as I wanted to do. And, of course, the players who know and analyzed why we didn’t compete at the moment.

“Let’s hope we can do more. We need to take the balance and play, trying to manage our feelings well, because now, of course, it’s a basic time for the season, tomorrow and the second foot in this competition.

“And we must try to play to be responsible. Be mature and emotionally stronger.”
