Wigan Warriors made eight attempts on a 48-24 Warrington Wolves route in a historic Super League game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
With more than 50,000 fans packing the event as the NRL, the Super League and the International Women’s Rugby League in combination, it was Warrington and Wigan who started the party, but the warriors had all the fun, trying from Tyler Dupree, Abbas Miski, Bevan French and Harry Harry Smith, as well as four conversions by Adam Keighran, giving them a dominant pencil in the half.
Wigan took the second half, where they had stopped in the first, silky efforts by Jai Field, Jake Wardle, Luke Thompson and Liam Marshall to pinch their advantage as Keighran’s splendor with the boot.
Warrington enjoyed a slow purple patch and managed to hit back with consolation he tries from Arron Lindop, James Harrison and Matt Dufty, as well as an impressive 100 -meter effort by Matty Ashton, but was very late for the Sam Burgess side.
Wigan shows a ruthless attack as Warrington leaves Vegas with questions to answer
Wigan and Warrington were in Las Vegas to make a story about the Super League and, in the first quarter, seemed a close competition with both sides to try, as Toby King and Marshall refused.
However, since then it was all wigan, and Dupree has made an immediate impact on the bench, writing his own script as a nephew of Super Bowl Billy Joe Dupree (Dallas Cowboys in 1978) as he opened the scoring in Las Vegas in the 17th minute.
This began the Wigan wave that allowed Miski to show some acrobatics in the corner before the Junior Nsemba continued to haunt its huge routes, fueling French as Wigan moved 18-0 to just 10 minutes left over from the first 40.
With the support of their strong fans, Wigan did not even became Smith rounded from the first half, as he finished a silky French pass, Keighran turning once again as Warrington went to reconstitute very quickly.
The lethal combination of field and French then came to the forefront in the second half, the first to go in the 45th minute after the combination with Marshall before the French broke, fueled his full back and sent Wardle to the corner.
Just a few minutes later, it was Thompson who fell after a brilliant French passage, cementing a 42-0 lead for the warriors.
With the game left, Warrington then found their moment, as Harrison and Dufty scored in a fast succession, but their joy ended quickly as Marshall finally made his effort as he ran in the corner in the 77th minute.
The game then ended with an impressive full length from Ashton – Wolves Winger even lost his boot in the process – but despite the dazzling end from Warrington, it was Wigan’s night at the Big Las Vegas Stage.
Peet: I knew we would appear on the Big Stage | Burgess: We were not willing to do hard things
Coach Wigan Warriors Matt Peet at Sky Sports:
“I think both teams tried to play an open rugby and the two defenses were tested. He got a lot of defense and I’m really proud of the show.
“This team goes up on the big occasion and I was sure all week we would perform.”
Warrington Wolves Head coach Sam Burgess at Sky Sports:
“I was frustrated with the result for sure. We have missed a chance in a big scene in a great moment.
“We were not willing to do the hard things on the back of the first half and they cost us the game. Forty -eight points are really disappointing.
“It’s the first time in my time in the club that we were not in the game. It’s new to understand.”
