UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been fatally shot in Manhattan—in what police say was a targeted attack



Brian Thompson, CEO of insurance group UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in Manhattan, local news sources said reported.

Thompson, 50, was shot outside New York Hilton Midtown, where the company is hosting its investor day. Police sources he said New York Post Thompson arrived early at the hotel around 6.40am, where a masked man was allegedly preparing to shoot him in a targeted attack. Police say they have not confirmed Thompson’s identity.

Thompson was rushed to a hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead there, police said Wealth. The gunman fled eastbound on Sixth Avenue, and police are still searching for him.

The CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, Thompson has been part of the parent company UnitedHealth Group since 2004, and previously served as CFO for UnitedHealthcare’s Employer and Individual, Community and State, and Medicare and Pension companies. UnitedHealth Group ranks fourth in 2024 Fortune 500 and number 8 on the Fortune Global 500. It was the largest healthcare company by revenue in 2023.

UnitedHealthcare did not immediately respond Wealthrequest for comment.
