Pope Francis rested in the hospital during the peaceful night after the breathing crisis, blood transfusion

Pope Francis, 88, rested during a quiet ninth night in the Gemelli hospital of Rome after a breathing crisis and blood transfusions, the Vatican said on Sunday.

The update came after doctors said that Francis, who had removed part of one lung when he was younger, was in critical condition.

It is unclear if he was awake and breakfast.

The Pope suffered a long -term asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday while being treated for double pneumonia and a complex lung infection.

He received “high streams” of oxygen to help him breathe, and he received blood transfusions after tests revealed low counts of platelets that are needed for coagulation, according to the Vatican.

Francis “remains alert and spent the day in an armchair, although in more pain than yesterday,” said the Vatican.

Doctors said the prognosis of Francis was ‘reserved’. Doctors have said that his condition touches, given his older age, vulnerability and already existing lung disease.

The most important threat is when the infection enters the bloodstream, a serious condition known as sepsis, the doctors said.
