The triple Pro Bowl Quarterback made the first comments during an interview with Colorado Football Star Travis Hunter.
Newton told Hunter that he “has no way to influence the game like a quarterback does.”
“I went to a dressing room of losers,” said Newton. ‘Just honest. Boys didn’t know how to win, guys didn’t know how to prepare. They did not take themselves seriously to realize that we were 2-14. There were a lot of 2-14 in the mentality of those guys. “

One of the former teammates of Newton, Steve Smithtook an exception to the comments from the Quarterback.

A few hours later Smith posted: “I looked and listened from a distant u @cameronnewon talks about @panthers! None of us is perfect. Yes, we were 2-14 before you bless us with the presence. The way you I I I have been talking about @Panthers lately, I am very disappointed.
Smith played for the Panthers from 2001-13 and is the most productive receiver that a Panthers-Uniform wears. He is also a finalist for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Newton said that he has “no fight” with Smith and understands why he had a problem with the comments. Newton clarified that he referred to the performance of the Panthers as a whole and not individual players when he made the original comments.
“I’m not specifically talking about those guys,” said Newton. “I am talking about the culture that was there before I entered the dressing room. And it was the mentality of a losers.”

Newton said the Panthers still had it in his first two seasons when they went 6-10 and 7-9.

It started to come together in 2013, when Carolina went 12-4 before he lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the play-offs. The 2015 team went 15-1 and earned a place in the Super Bowl. Carolina was short of that game and lost 24-10 to the Denver Broncos.
