The incident preceded a wave of heinous messages addressed to the former Mali International Doucoure.

The statement searched: “Liverpool FC and Everton FC are aware of – and condemn the strongest terms – racist abuse received by Abdoulaye Doucoure after Wednesday night’s Derby Merseyside.

“This abuse is doomed and should not, and should not be tolerated.

“Together, the two clubs will work with MerseySide police, who are conducting an investigation to identify those responsible.

“We also encourage people who testify or experience abuse on the internet to report and point it out on the platforms of the social media in which they appear.

“We must all, including social media companies, take a zero tolerance attitude. Platforms must take accountability and action to ban such criminals.

“Racism and hatred have no place online, on our stadiums or in our communities.”
