Champions League uncertainty as ICC delays board meeting

The fate of 2025 Champions Trophy still not known. THE International Cricket Council (ICC) has not announced a date for the next Board meeting. There are reports that it could be done in a few days. However, there has been no confirmation from the ICC side yet.

After a brief meeting on 9 November, the ICC hinted that it would reconvene soon. However, it hasn’t happened yet. Even top officials remain in the dark. The wait now centers on Jay Shah, the recently appointed president of the ICC. He will officially take up his role after the re-opening of the Dubai headquarters later this week.

Why is the ICC Board meeting delayed?

One of the contentious issues was whether Pakistan will be the sole host for the Champions Trophy. According to recent reports, PCB has introduced a new “Formula Partnership” or “Fusion Formula”.

Under this proposal, Pakistan seems open to the hybrid hosting model, but on one condition: India too must adopt a similar arrangement for global tournaments in the next three years. Pakistan has made a demand that their matches should also be played at neutral venues. This includes the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.

BCCI has not reacted to this proposal so far. However, any decision by the council would involve consultation with the Indian government. The Indian government has stuck to its position on cricket ties with Pakistan.

The ICC will hold a broadcasting workshop on 5 December

Speculations point to a possible face-to-face meeting after December 5, when Jay Shah officially assumes his role. Although the virtual meeting technically can take place before then, ICC insiders seem quite uncertain about the final date.

To make things more exciting, the ICC has arranged a broadcasters’ workshop scheduled on December 5 in Dubai. Media partners including Jio Star from India will attend this annual event. While Champions Trophy updates may emerge, ICC sources stress that the workshop is not specifically linked to the tournament.
