Neuer sees red for the first time in his DFB Cup career

Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his storied career to reduce Bayern Munich to 10 men after 17 minutes of their DFB Cup clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

Germany legend Neuer was sent off after racing out of his box and bringing down Jeremy Frimpong in the round of 16 at the Allianz Arena.

Neuer was seen apologizing to manager Vincent Kompany and striker Leroy Sane, who made way for substitute goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Young expelled

A booking against Augsburg in January was Neuer’s only booking last season and the latest of 23 cautions since his Schalke debut in 2006.

The Bayern captain made his 19th appearance of 2024/25, having helped his side move four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The 38-year-old was in goal for Bayern’s 4-0 thrashings of SSV Ulm and Mainz in their first two DFB Cup games.

Bayern vs Leverkusen

Bayern had started brightly in the absence of Harry Kane with a hamstring injury, closing when Florian Wirtz shot wide.

Sane was dropped from the starting line-up with Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise, and Neuer’s departure did not seem to unduly trouble Kompany’s side.

Konrad Leimer broke clear and sent a shot into the side netting just before Peretz saved Fribong’s foot.

Leon Goretzka’s header was saved by visiting goalkeeper Matej Kovar and Wirtz’s effort was saved by Peretz as the sides reached the interval.

Who is Daniel Peretz?

Israel goalkeeper Peretz joined Bayern from Maccabi Tel Aviv for a reported fee of more than £4.1m in August 2023.

Now 24, he made his Bayern debut against Prussian Münster in the DFB Cup in September 2023, with his lone Bundesliga appearance so far coming against Wolfsburg in May.

Peretz enjoyed one of the best performances of his career on 14 November, helping Israel to a 0-0 draw away to France in the Nations League.
