Air travel has certainly changed over time, and what was once an occasion where smart dressing was mandatory has become significantly more casual.
Recently, Spirit Airlines issued a new dress code for its customers, after several news reports about customers being removed from flights because of their clothing.
Now Spirit Airlines customers can be removed from flights if they are “barefoot or inadequately clothed (i.e. see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other genitals), or whose clothing or article, including body art , lewd, obscene or offensive in nature.”

Here are some other rules airlines have regarding clothing. Do any of these surprise you?
1. Hawaiian Airlines
Passengers on Hawaiian Airlines it is forbidden to wear bathing suits, and “clothing must cover the upper part of the torso,” the contract of carriage says.

Shorts are fine, but “speedos and bikini bottoms are not allowed,” according to Hawaiian Airlines. And bare feet are not okay either.
“In all cases, clothing must not be lewd, obscene or obviously offensive to others,” Hawaiian Airlines said.

2. Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines passengers are not allowed to wear clothing that is “indecent, obscene or patently offensive,” and passengers must wear shoes.

3. United Airlines
Like Southwest, passengers on United have a fairly loose dress code. United Airlines’ contract of carriage stipulates that passengers must be “properly dressed.”
Clothing must also not be ‘indecent, obscene or offensive’, and passengers must wear shoes.

4. US Airlines
US airlines transport code does not specify what is not allowed, but says passengers “must dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing are not permitted.”

5. Delta Air Lines
Delta’s transportation code has no specific dress code, but states that passengers can be removed if their “conduct, dress, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offending or annoyance to other passengers.”

6. Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways has a dress code for its business class and higher passengers, the website says.

“Depending on your destination, there are different rules and regulations regarding the type of clothing you should wear. The dress code is intended to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers while traveling, so it is important to understand the rules before you travel,” Qatar Airways said.

This dress code bans shorts, sportswear and ‘overly revealing clothing’, and business class passengers must be dressed ‘smart casual’.
“Passengers should pay attention to the dress code when traveling in business class as this will ensure their comfort and respect for other passengers,” Qatar Airways said.
