Alex Hartley accuses Sophie Ecclestone and England team of giving her the cold shoulder after Women’s Ashes 2025 defeat

In a twist that has sparked debate across the cricketing world, Alex Hartleyformer England cricketer and current broadcaster, has accused the star player Sophie Ecclestone and several members of the England women’s cricket team gave her the “indifference” post his T20I opening Women’s Ashes 2025. This disagreement stems from Hartley’s outspoken criticism of the team’s fitness levels during the tournament, which led to a noticeable rift in the team’s dynamic.

Alex Hartley accuses Sophie Ecclestone of refusing to give her interview

After England’s defeat by 57 runs in the first T20I in Sydney, which confirmed that Australia have retained the Ashes, Hartley revealed that Sophie Ecclestone, England’s leading spinner, had “refused” to do a television interview with her.

“Sophie Ecclestone refused to do a TV interview with me today. I’ve been hung out to dry by the England team: none of them will talk to me on the touchline.’ said Hartley The BBC’s TMS podcast.

This refusal by Ecclestone was interpreted by Hartley as a direct consequence of her previous criticisms. He had previously made headlines for claiming that a few players in the England squad were not up to par in terms of fitness.

After England’s disappointing exit in the T20 World Cup and subsequent loss in the Ashes series, Hartley’s comments were seen as a direct criticism of the team’s performance and preparation. Her remarks focused particularly on the team’s inability to match Australia’s “sportsmanship”, which she believed was a major factor in their defeat.

“The reason I said they weren’t as fit as Australia is because I want them to compete with Australia, I want them to be better than Australia and I want them to win Ashes and World Cups. I give my opinion and have been given the cold shoulder by the England team ever since. I upset them, clearly. Jon Lewis came out and said there is no fitness problem in his team, there is no fitness problem in the England environment. They obviously think I’m completely wrong in my opinion – which is fine, absolutely fine. I have a right to my opinions and they have a right to theirs.” added Hartley.

Hartley acknowledges the support of some players despite setbacks

While Hartley expressed her disappointment at her treatment, she stressed that not all players have avoided it. He acknowledged that some people, both players and staff, remained supportive and approachable.

“Some of the players have been absolutely outstanding: I’ve spoken to them on the road, in the ground, wherever they are. But some people – coaches, players – literally haven’t looked at me.” Hartley added further.
