Kate Winslet is known for her fearless film roles – but she’s not completely fearless.
While appearing on the Friday, January 17 episode of The Late ShowWinslet, 49, told the host Stephen Colbert for what she calls “the scariest animal in the world.”
“Honestly, I’m not brilliant with cows,” she told Colbert, 60, prompting laughter from both the host and the studio audience. “No, no, no, listen, here’s what’s going on. Someone said to me, “Oh, you’ve got to learn to read a field of cows, you’ve got to be careful because if they turn, they’re gone.”
The Lee the star went on to recall the advice she received, explaining that if you see “their tails going around” and they’re fluttering like that and there’s flies,” it means they’re unhappy. “They might charge you,” she recalled.
Winslet added that she never realized how dangerous cows could be, telling Colbert that she goes “hiking all the time,” where she’s often on trails “through fields of cows.”
“I thought I was going to be pushed to the ground,” Winslet cheerfully finished with a straight face. The remark prompted Colbert to wonder, “Has that ever happened?” to which Winslet revealed that cows had indeed stalked her and her mother in the past.
“They were slowly peering at him and then they sped up, really, really,” Winslet said. “Borderline (a) couple of gallopers, I’d say. In England, however, there are quite a few stories of people having very unpleasant encounters with cows. Very real. So I am extremely wary of the cow field.
She added that she wants to “deal better” with her fear, telling Colbert that “they’re not really scary, are they? No, they’re not,” before reiterating that being wary of cows is a “legitimate fear.”
Colbert’s light-hearted interview question was part of what the TV host calls “The Colbert Questionert,” which consists of 15 interview questions to help him get to know his guests. Previous celebrities who have participated in the often hysterical interviews include George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.
As for Winslet, her concerns about the cow follow the actress’ candid recollection of one of her most famous screen moments. During the September 26 episode of “Happy Sad Confused” podcast hosted by Josh HorowitzWinslet revealed that she and Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio shoot yours the infamous door scene in waist-deep water.
“That tank was pretty uncomfortable,” Winslet told Horowitz. “To pop a bubble, this tank was waist high. So first of all, I would regularly say to myself, “Ugh, can I just pee,” and then I’d get up, walk out the door, walk to the edge of the tank, which was about 20 feet away, and I’d literally have to throw my leg over si, to get out of the tank and go pee and then come back and crawl through the door again.
She added that DiCaprio, 49, was on his knees the entire time filming his (spoiler alert) death scene that has been hotly debated for years.
