Chelsea vs Wolves: Preview, predictions and lineup

Chelsea look to end their miserable five-game Premier League winless streak when they host Wolverhampton on Monday night.

The Blues stumbled to draws or defeats in games against Everton, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, with the short-lived title contenders now looking to retain their place in the Champions League qualifiers.

While Chelsea enduring a difficult situation, they can take comfort from their most recent encounter Wolves. Having suffered three successive defeats against the Midlands side, Noni Madueke’s hat-trick inspired the Blues to a 6-2 win at Molineux in August.

The six-goal defeat came under Gary O’Neil and new manager Vitor Pereira will be looking to improve on that result and performance on Monday afternoon. Two defeats on the bounce mean Wolves are still in a fierce relegation battle but have shown signs of life under the Portuguese manager.

Behold 90 minutes conflict preview.

Enzo Maresca has revealed talisman Cole Palmer is one of several doubts ahead of Monday’s game. The attacking midfielder, along with Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez, did not train on Friday and will be assessed closer to kick-off.

The Blues are still without long-term absentees Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile in defence, with the former likely to miss the rest of the season and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also missing from the engine room.

Mykhailo Mudryk remains suspended after failing a drug test.

Chelsea predicted formation against Wolves (4-2-3-1): Sanchez? James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Sancho? Jackson.

Mateus Kounia

The good news for Pereira was that Mateusz Cunha returned from suspension against Newcastle, even if the Wolves star could not prevent his side slumping to a 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park.

In worse news, Wolves remain without many players for the trip to Stamford Bridge, with Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera missing in defence. The latter will miss the rest of the season.

Enzo Gonzalez and Sasa Kalajdzic are long-term absentees, while Boubacar Traore is yet to make his return despite edging closer to a first-team return.

Wolves predicted line-up against Chelsea (3-4-3): This; Doherty, S. Bueno, Agbadou; Semedo, Andre, J. Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Guedes, Cunha; Larsen Beach.

Chelsea have proved unpredictable in recent weeks, failing to win five in a row despite being favorites in each fixture. They are expected to triumph on Monday afternoon as well, although their home record is not particularly inspiring (W4, D4, L2).

However, their defensive issues and potential absentees heading into the clash could prove auspicious for their visitors, who have attacking threats of their own in the form of the returning Cunha and power forward Jorgen Strand Larsen.

It will likely be an entertaining affair, with Chelsea sneaking in an important win.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-2 Wolves
