Well, they left it late, but Liverpool secured their first Premier League win of 2025 against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Darwin Nunez’s late strike secured a much-needed win for the Reds, who had stumbled to draws with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest at the start of the new year. Maximum points from their trip to west London ensured they avoided another slide in the race for top spot.
However, there will be little time to celebrate their trip to the capital, with attention immediately turning to some tough upcoming games. With one eye on Arsenal in pursuit, Liverpool cannot afford to be complacent for the rest of January and beyond.
Here’s how LiverpoolThe next five league games are pitted against the opposition Arsenal‘small.
Liverpool’s next five games may not be the toughest on paper, but they certainly have the ability to spring a few surprises. The simplest of the bunch seems to be their home matchup Ipswich Townwho are next in Premier League following a Champions League visit from Lille.
After their last-gasp Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool make the long trip to the south coast to face Bournemouth. The Reds have won their last two visits to the Vitality Stadium but suffered a disappointing defeat in March 2023 – Mohamed Salah missing from the spot in a 1-0 defeat the week after Liverpool had thrashed Manchester United 7-0.
The renewed Merseyside derby is scheduled for Wednesday February 12, with the previous game postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Evertonwho are once again under David Moyes, are always a tough challenge for the Reds at Goodison Park, with nine of the last 12 such meetings ending in draws.
A home clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers should prove a relatively routine victory for Liverpool but their subsequent journey to the champions Manchester City promises to be significantly tougher. The Cityzens are in incredibly patchy form but still retain plenty of star quality, with Liverpool failing to win any of their last eight visits to the Etihad Stadium.

Sandwiched between Arsenal’s two remaining Champions League fixtures comes a trip Wolves in the Premier League. The Gunners have won their last seven meetings with the Old Gold, including a 2-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season.
However, things get tougher for Arsenal next weekend as they also prepare for a clash with Man City. Having drawn in dramatic circumstances at the Etihad in September – ten-foot Arsenal conceded in the 98th minute – the Gunners will be looking for a confidence-boosting win against the underdog Cityzens.
After the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Arsenal travel to the East Midlands. Up against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s race Leicester Citythe Gunners will be looking to extend their six-game winning streak against the Foxes.
Arsenal have scored 11 times in their last two games with West Ham United but they actually lost their most recent home clash with the Irons last season. A defeat that proved pivotal in the Premier League title race, Arsenal will be aiming to avoid a similar upset as they tangle with Liverpool in this year’s top flight.
The win is all the more important against the Hammers who are eyeing a trip to the top flight Nottingham Forest follows. The Midlands side have been in excellent form and have taken four points from meetings with Liverpool this season. They may have won 3-0 at the Emirates in November, but the Gunners will endure a much tougher task at the City Ground.
