Trump nominates Penny Schwinn as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education


president-elect Trump announced on Saturday that he has chosen Penny Schwinnthe former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education, as deputy U.S. secretary Ministry of Education.

While in Tennessee, Schwinn oversaw the implementation of the department’s response to the coronavirus pandemic Gov. Bill Lee‘S school voucher program and an overhaul of the state’s school funding formula, the Associated Press reported.

Schwinn previously worked at the Texas Bureau of Education as Deputy Commissioner for Standards and Engagement, Deputy Commissioner for Special Populations and Monitoring, and Deputy Chief Commissioner for Academics.

She was also deputy secretary of education in Delaware.

Trump congratulated Schwinn in a post on Truth Social on Saturday.

“Penny, a former teacher herself, became the founder of a charter school because she believes in the power of School choiceand is committed to delivering the American Dream to the next generation by bringing education BACK TO THE STATES,” Trump wrote. “Congratulations to Penny and her wonderful family!”

Schwinn has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. of Claremont.
