Melbourne Renegades captain Will Sutherland has been ordered out of the bowling attack during the match against the Brisbane Heat in the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season. Sutherland was removed from the bowling attack after running into the danger zone more than once while bowling during the match.
The Melbourne Renegades took the win and opted to bowl at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne on Saturday 18th January. Nathan McSweeney and Jack Wood gave Brisbane Heat a strong start. Adam Zaba made a breakthrough for his side by dismissing McSweeney, who scored 29 off 26 balls.

The incident occurred on the final ball of the 12th over. Will Sutherland was ordered out of the bowling attack for stepping into the danger zone, having previously been cautioned in his first over. Matt Renshaw smashed three consecutive sixes before Sutherland were removed from the bowling attack.
The Big Bash League’s official social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) shared the video of Sutherland arguing with the umpire after being sent off for the attack.

Fergus O’Neill Joins Skipper Will Sutherland in Taking Away Bowling
The incident occurred again in the race when Fergus O’Neill was ordered out of attack for landing in the danger zone after a warning. O’Neill was the second bowler, after Sutherland, to be dismissed from the attack during the match. Josh Brown completed the over both times.

Brisbane Heat scored 196 runs for the loss of four in 20 overs. Jack Wood was the top scorer for the Heat with 45 runs off 27 balls, including two fours and four sixes. Matt Renshaw (40 off 22) and Tom Alsop (42 off 26) chipped in with useful knocks. For Renegades, Adam Zampa took two wickets for 29 runs.
Law 41.13 MCC: Bowler running in protected area
41.13.1 It is unfair for a bowler to enter the protected area during his or her follow-up without reasonable cause, whether or not the ball is delivered.
41.13.2 If a bowler breaks this Law, in the first instance and when the ball is dead, the umpire shall
– watch the bowler and inform the other umpire of what has happened. This caution will apply to this bowler throughout the innings.
– inform the captain of the field side and the fighters about what happened.
41.13.3 If, in that innings, the same bowler again breaches this Law, the umpire shall repeat the above procedure indicating that this is a final warning. This warning will also apply throughout the innings.
41.13.4 If, in that innings, the same bowler breaks this Law for the third time when the ball is dead, the umpire shall direct the grounds captain to immediately dismiss the bowler from bowling.
