“No pot of money to spend” says Howe as Almiron could go

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says he does not have the cash available to make a big signing this month and winger Miguel Almiron could leave the club.

Newcastle have not made a major signing since the £32m arrival of Tino Libramento from Southampton in August 2023 and they lost Marc Guehi last summer.

With the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules continuing to cause headaches for clubs, Howe says meeting the spending restrictions that forced them to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh remains a challenge.

Almiron is the latest player to be linked with a move to MLS this month.

Howe said: “No one wants to lose any players from our current squad, especially in positions where we are a bit fragile. Why would we want to put ourselves in this position?

“But when you’re armed with all the facts, sometimes you have to suffer that short-term pain.

“I don’t know if this summer will be different and suddenly the perspective changes completely. I think that’s for another day. What I would say is that I hope the future beyond will look very different.

“There’s not a pot of money sitting there waiting to be spent, it’s all about June 30 and making sure you comply with the rules by that date. Obviously, if you spend money, then you’ll have to get it back at a later date.”

Meanwhile, Howe and his players will be solely focused on the task of trying to claim a 10th consecutive win for the club when they face his former club Bournemouth on Saturday.

Fabian Schar is a doubt due to illness, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is close to returning.
