John Kirby says Biden, Trump worked as ‘one team’ in securing ceasefire: ‘There’s plenty of credit to go around’

“We worked on this as one team, as the American people expected us to do,” Biden’s national security communications adviser said.

“The president made it clear to us within the national security team that we had to make sure that the Trump team, especially Mr. Witkoff, was essential and fully invested in everything we did because they would own it if we left the office,” Kirby revealed.

“Mr. Witkoff traveled to the region. He and Brett McGurk, our Special Coordinator for the Middle East, spoke several times a day over the past week as we sorted out the fine details and tried to get it across the finish line. Witkoff himself credited the work he was able to enjoy by working with us.”

Kirby says the bottom line is that the deal is done, the hostages are brought home and the war ends.

‘Both the newly elected President Trump and certainly President Biden shared that goal and made sure their teams shared that result as well,” he added.

On Wednesday, Kirby shared that he is “confident” the deal will be implemented, though he acknowledged there is still “hard work” ahead following the ongoing conflict with Hamas since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

President-elect Donald Trump warned Hamas on January 7 that “all hell will break loose” if the hostages are not returned at his inauguration.

The agreement will enter into force on January 19, just one day earlier President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration.

Kirby stated that the “major hurdle” had been “overcome,” which meant the deal had to be finalized, signed and put into place. “Hopefully this weekend we’ll see some families reunited,” he said.
