Elizabeth Morris/Prime VideoDick Wolfis On call follows fictional law enforcement agencies working for the Long Beach Police Department — but why did the procedural go out of its way to offer no commentary?
During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Troyan Bellisario, Brandon Laracuente, Eric LaSalle and Lori Laughlin discussed how their new show introduced important conversations without choosing sides.
“At least in my own experience, the show left me with more questions than real answers. I hope the audience will experience that as well,” notes 30-year-old Laracuente, who plays police officer Alex Diaz. “At the end of it, we’re not really trying to paint any narrative.”
Laracuente clapped On call about “just trying to show the human side” to everyone, adding, “Hopefully audience members can relate to one of the characters (on the show) in some way, shape or form.”
Meanwhile, Bellisario, 39, agreed not to “to have a single message.”
“We want so many different people – who have very different views about the police – to come to this show. And we want them to take away what they take away,” said the actress, who plays Officer Tracy Harmon. us. (“Executive Producer) Elliot (wolf) say it really well He said, “We want to create a buffet, and we want everyone to come to the table and eat together.” That’s the job. We’re not going to say, “Oh, you have this idea, so you’re not welcome here.” You have this idea, so you won’t like this show. You will see people make amazing decisions (on screen). You will see how we make mistakes. No one is a hero. And these are human beings – they happen to do this work.
On Call, which premiered Thursday, January 9, is Wolf Entertainment’s first scripted streaming series. The brutal drama used bodycam, dashcam and cell phone footage to follow the cops in the field.

While talking to usLoughlin, 60, showed support for On callThe “intention” when “not trying to comment” in any way. Her star Eric La Salle found this to be an attractive part of the show when he joined as host and director.
“We’re just trying to present real believable characters. We all spent a shift—or at least a minimum shift—riding alongside a cop, answering calls and observing, which was extremely helpful. For me as a director, to be able to be in that cruiser and be the fly on the wall is the goal for me with the audience,” explained the 62-year-old actor, who plays Sergeant Lassman. “We’re trying to bring the audience in and make them feel like they’re in that car with us and that they’re having these conversations with us. Everyone was in sync with what we were trying to do.
La Salle called the “prime purpose” the attraction of the audience “no comment”.
“We don’t say (anything), we just present. It is up to you to decide how to interpret these signs. You may like some characters, you may not like some characters,” he continued. “You might agree with some characters (and) you might not. But our job — and I think I’m proud of the job we’ve done — is to present what we see as truth and what we see as the multidimensionality of these characters.”
On callthe mission of standing out it involved adaptation to the times.
“Our audience is evolving. The police procedural is nothing new and is definitely a Wolf Entertainment production. It’s classic and everybody likes it,” Bellisario noted. “Younger audiences are mostly streaming. They watch less procedural and more character-driven shows. We’re going to use the world of law enforcement, but we’re going to show it to you in a place that you don’t really see very often, which is Long Beach. It’s a whole new community and landscape.”
She concluded: “We’re not going to show you a case and then solve it by the end of it. This season has an overarching storyline that our characters are following. but it’s really just about the time between us and that relationship and how it builds and how it falls and the betrayals and the beliefs. It’s just an amazing amalgamation of all these new ideas that I think represent a completely original idea in the show.”
