Initially asked by Sunil Gavaskar about his inclusion, the 21-year-old proved his mettle with a resilient knock of 41 runs in the first innings.

His vital contribution helped India reach 150, setting the tone for a competitive game.

Despite initial struggles with the ball, Reddy remained unfazed and showed his ability at all levels.

In the second innings, Reddy showed his adaptability, scoring a quickfire 38*, further cementing India’s dominance.

He also won his maiden goal by denying Mitchell Marsh, proving his worth in difficult conditions. His sharp fielding added to his impact, making him a key player in India’s 295-run victory.

Gavaskar’s Change of Heart

Sunil Gavaskar, who had questioned Reddy’s readiness for Test cricket, praised the youngster after his performance.

“That double hundred was amazing, as was the 200-plus opening partnership, but the most impressive innings came from Nitish Reddy. He showed an awareness of what was required that belied the fact that he was making his Test debut,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for Sportstar.

“Even in the first innings, he showed a refreshing perception of scoring opportunities and ended up being the top scorer. His bowling was also useful and his fielding was excellent. Here is a man for the future,” he added.

On Day 1 of the Perth Test between India and Australia, Sunil Gavaskar criticized the decision to drop Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja from the playing XI. He also questioned Nitish Reddy’s inclusion in the team.

“It is a new management, a new thinking. They have gone with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is a promising cricketer, they are not wrong about that. But is he ready for Test cricket?” Gavaskar asked while doing commentary.

Highlighting Reddy’s awareness and adaptability, Gavaskar termed his innings as the most impressive of the match.

The former captain acknowledged Reddy’s contributions, stating that his batting, bowling and fielding showed maturity beyond his years.

Gavaskar’s endorsement marked a significant moment as he hailed Reddy as a “player for the future”.
