Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay will return for more post-apocalyptic adventures in HBO’s upcoming second season The last of us.
Based on the 2013 video game of the same name, the series follows Joel (Pascal), a grizzled survivor tasked with transporting Ellie (Ramsey) across the country, 20 years after a zombie-like fungus, cordyceps, has wiped out much of civilization. As they continue their journey, the unlikely duo form a surrogate father-daughter relationship along the way.
After the series premieres in January 2023. the series — co-created by Craig Mazin and the game’s writer and creative director, Neil Druckman — was renewed for Season 2 after only two of the season’s nine episodes aired.
The second season is expected to follow the plot of the 2020 video game sequel. The Last of Us Part IIwhich begins several years after the original story. Although the series has not been picked up for a third installment, Mazin previously teased that the show’s team may need more than one more season to properly portray Part IIevents of.
“The amount of story left will take us more than a season to tell. But I definitely don’t see it as something that goes on and on and on,” he said Collider in January 2023 “We don’t have that ambition. Our ambition is to tell the story that exists as best as possible in a different medium.”
