Drugged driver behind the wheel of a speeding Mustang causes an accident that seriously injures an officer: police


A Brentwood, New York The man was arrested after allegedly speeding on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) while under the influence of drugs and causing a crash that seriously injured a police officer, police said.

Court records show 29-year-old Cody Fisher faces several charges, including driving while driving ability is impaired by drugssecond-degree assault, second-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving.

Suffolk County Police said Highway Patrol Officer Brendon Gallagher was conducting a traffic stop on the west side of the LIE on Sunday around 6 p.m. when a 2021 Ford Mustang drove by at a high rate of speed.

Gallagher, a member of the Street Takeover Task Force, responded to the speeding vehicle and activated his lights and sirens before attempting to pull over the driver of the Mustang.

According to police, the driver of the Mustang, later identified as Fisher, lost control of the car and drove Gallagher’s patrol car out of the way.

The crash sent Gallagher’s patrol car flying off the highway and flipping upside down.

Fisher’s Mustang also drove off the highway and struck a light pole, police said.

An outside service Nassau County Police Officer who was passing by at the time of the crash reportedly stopped to help and eventually arrested Fisher.

Police said Gallagher, who was in critical condition, was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital, while Fisher was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

He was arraigned Monday in First District Court in Central Islip and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
