Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expected to announce his resignation: report

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau According to Canadian media, he will reportedly leave his position as early as Monday.

The news was first reported Sunday evening by the Globe and Mail, citing three sources. The newspaper said it is unclear exactly when the Liberal Party leader will resign, but his resignation is expected to come before a national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

The news comes as Trudeau’s popularity continues to decline in Canada, where national elections are scheduled for October 20 this year. The country continues to suffer from a housing crisis, declining GDP per capita and high inflation, among other things.

According to Canadian pollster Angus Reid, as of December 24, Trudeau has a disapproval rating of about 68%, while a paltry 28% of Canadians support him.

The possible resignation would also come after Trudeau, who became prime minister in 2015, braved a difficult few months in politics. In September he was confronted with one no vote of confidence this later failed in parliament, despite attempts by the Conservative Party to remove him from office.

On December 16 Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced she would resign from Trudeau’s cabinet, dealing a major blow to the prime minister. In her resignation letter, she claimed that leaving the cabinet was the only “fair and feasible path”.

“Over the past few weeks, you and I have been at odds over the best path forward for Canada,” wrote Freeland, who was previously seen as a Trudeau loyalist.

“Our country faces a serious challenge,” the letter added. “That means we need to keep our budget powder dry today so we have the reserves we might need for an upcoming tariff war.”

Later in December, one of Trudeau’s key allies, The new leader of the Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singhsaid he planned to table a formal vote of no confidence on January 27.

“No matter who leads the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up. We will move a clear no-confidence motion in the next session of the House of Commons,” Singh said.

Trudeau’s personal choices have also drawn backlash from his opponents. In late November, Trudeau received international criticism after he was spotted dancing at a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto, while a devastating riot took place in his hometown of Montreal.

Don Stewart, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing part of Toronto, called out the prime minister in a post on X.

“Lawless protesters are running rampant across Montreal in violent protests. The Prime Minister is dancing,” the Canadian politician wrote. “This is the Canada the Liberal government built.”

“Bring law and order, safe streets and communities back to the Canada we once knew and loved,” Stewart added. Trudeau later denounced the lawlessness and called the riot “terrible.”
