Real Madrid ‘insulted’ Liverpool for Alexander-Arnold, says Neville – as Slot backs defender

Real Madrid “think they can get what they want” and have “insulted” Liverpool for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gary Neville has said.

Reigning Spanish and European champions Madrid are widely reported to have made a move for Alexander Arnold, who joined the Reds’ academy in 2004 but was out of contract at the end of the season.

“The offer is a bad time for him,” former Manchester United captain Neville told Sky Sports after Alexander-Arnold’s defensive form came under scrutiny during his club days. 2-2 draw at home with the Red Devils in the Premier League on Sunday.

“If you’ve got that, you go to a big game and you’re a local lad, it’s not going to be easy, having all that noise. Real Madrid is one hell of an animal.

“I thought it was insulting for Real Madrid to behave like that. They act like that sometimes and think they can get what they want.”

Slot: Alexander-Arnold ‘didn’t have the best game’

United, who arrived 13 places and 23 points behind the league leadersconcentrated most of their attacks on the flanks of right-back Alexander-Arnold, scoring both goals from that side.

The 26-year-old England international was replaced by Conor Bradley four minutes after Amman Diallo had equalized with United’s second goal.

“Trent has mostly played good games for this club, but there have been games when he hasn’t been at his best,” Liverpool manager Arne Slott said.

“Today was not his best game, but that probably had something to do with United as well. It also has to do with Bruno Fernandes, who is a very good player and played well.

“(Diogo) Dalot was a threat on the left. It is not always easy to prevent them from getting into dangerous situations.

“Especially in the first half, sometimes Ryan (Gravenberch) wasn’t close enough to (Alexander-Arnold), so sometimes it was a 2-v-1 situation. I would put it more down to the quality of Dalot and Bruno Fernandes than Trent.”

Madrid “takes the mickey”

Former Three Lions right-back Neville said the speculation “wouldn’t be helpful” to Alexander-Arnold. “Liverpool are a club of massive stature and they are never going to sell him for £20m in January,” he added.

“You’re taking the micky, a little bit. I imagine that must have pissed him off. “You can imagine his family and his agent saying, ‘What’s going on, Trent?'”

Alexander-Arnold started 22 of Liverpool’s 24 Premier League and Champions League games in 2024/25.
