Matt Winkelmeier/Getty ImagesNicole Kidman paid an emotional tribute to his late mother Janelle Ann Kidman as she accepted the International Star Award at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
57-year-old Nicole received the award for her role in Baby girl on Friday, January 3, which was presented to her by Jamie Lee Curtis. In her speech, Kidman gave thanks Baby girl director Halina Rein and dedicated the award to his late mother, who he said he “still mourns”.
“Thank you for giving me the chance to say, ‘This is for my mom,'” Nicole said in her tearful acceptance speech. “My whole career has been for my mother and fatherwho are not here now. I will still continue to work and give to the world because I love what I do, I love all of you, and I am so grateful for the privilege of being a part of the film community.”
She added: “I’m sorry for crying, I didn’t mean to. But I’m feeling my mom right now, so this is for you.
Janelle died in September 2024. aged 84. Nicole had left the Venice Film Festival early on September 7 to return to Australia after learning of her mother’s death. At that time, Big Little Lies Alum was honored with the Best Actress Award at the Film Festival for Baby girl. Raine later read a statement at the festival on behalf of Nicole confirming his mother’s death.

Ann Presley/Getty Images“I arrived in Venice today to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed away,” Reign, 38, read Nicole’s statement at the time. “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, guided me and made me.”
The statement continued: “I am extremely grateful to be able to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision between life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.”
Janelle is survived by daughters Nicole and Antonia54.
Janelle’s cause of death has not been publicly released. “The family is heartbroken and is asking for privacy at this time,” a spokesperson for Nicole said Us Weekly at that time.
Nicole and Antonia thanked friends and fans for their well wishes joint statement shared via Instagram on September 12.
“My sister and I, along with our family, want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we’ve felt this week,” they said in a statement. “Every message we received from those who loved and admired our Mother meant more to us than we will ever be able to express. Thank you from our entire family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other ❤️”
