Prince William reacts to the death of the nanny’s stepson in the attack in New Orleans


Prince William offered his condolences after learning his former nanny’s stepson, Ed Pettyferit was one of the victims in the attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.

“Katherine and I were shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ed Petfer,” William, 42, wrote in a Saturday, Jan. 4, statement on his Instagram Story, also mentioning his wife Princess Kate Middleton. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with Pettyfer’s family and all those innocent people who were tragically affected by this horrific attack.”

William signed the note with a “W”, his personal designation based on his first initial.

A 42-year-old man from Texas drove a rental truck through the crowd on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street on Wednesday, January 1. Pettyfer, who was 31, was one of at least 14 killed. The driver was shot and killed during a shootout with police.

“The entire family is devastated by the tragic news of Ed’s death in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to so many.” saturday statement from Pettyfer’s family read shared with London’s Metropolitan Police. “We will all miss him terribly.”

The statement continued: “Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost family members to this terrible attack. We wish to mourn the loss of Ed as a family in private. Thank you.”

Pettyfer was the stepson of Tiggy Legge-Bourke, who had previously worked as a nanny for William and his brother, Prince Harrywhen they were children. (William and Harry, 40, are the sons of exes King Charles III and the late Princess Diana.)

“(She was) our favorite nannyto be exact, though Tiggy couldn’t stand being called that,” Harry recalled in his Spare memoirs. “She would bite the head off anyone who tried. ‘I’m not a nanny, I’m your friend!’ Mom, unfortunately, didn’t see it that way. Mom saw Tiggy not as a nanny but as a rival. It’s common knowledge that Mom suspected that Tiggy was being groomed as her future replacement. (Did mom see Tiggy as her backup?)”

As noted in the passage, so does Harry called his 2023 memoir following the idea that he was a ‘back-up’ to brother William in the line of succession. William is the direct successor to his father Charles, 75, as regent of England. Harry immediately followed as William and his wife Kate, 42, welcomed their three children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

While Harry is now fifth in line to the British throne, he resigned from his post as a senior working member of the royal family in 2020. Harry and his wife Meghan Markle now live in Montecito, California with their two children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibeth, 3. Harry has yet to speak publicly about Pettyfer’s death.
