Kevin MazurIt’s one of the most iconic dance moves in the world — but it turns out Beyonce may have had help with her infamous ‘booty shake’ from an unknown British boy band from the 90s.
In 1997 pop trio 911—essentially the UK’s answer to The Backstreet Boys—performed their song “Bodyshakin'” on the same music show as Destiny’s Child. And according to one of the group members, Spike DawbarnBeyonce loved their sexy dance moves and asked them to teach her.
“There’s something about the move,” Dawbarn said in a new BBC documentary Boybands forever. “We did a TV show with Destiny’s Child. We performed and did Bodyshakin’ and BeyoncĂ© said, ‘show us that move! Keep doing it!’”
Even though BeyoncĂ© wasn’t as big a star back then as she is now, the boy band was more than happy to obey her orders. “Me and Jimmy were just standing there doing the move, because if BeyoncĂ© asked you to, you did it!” he recalled. “So when you watch BeyoncĂ© videos while you’re rocking it, I’m like ‘ah, she rocked it!’ We did it first!” (Well, there’s only so many ways you can rock that booty, right?)

John McLaughlin of the same documentary. “It wasn’t even a dance, it was acrobatics. So I was like OK, let’s give them a song that’s a theme song. We wanted it to sound like a dance. A word that just sticks in your brain. When Bodyshakin’ came on I thought, ah this is it!’
The catchy song reached number 3 in the UK singles charts and also in the Australian and New Zealand charts, but the band never took off in the US. The Trio — Dowbarn, plus a fellow dancer Jimmy Constable and hearts singer Lee Brennan — broke up in 1999 before reuniting several times in 2010, when they achieved massive success in Southeast Asia, selling out venues in Malaysia in 2019. and collaborating with a Vietnamese pop artist in 2023.
