The US Surgeon General has issued a new advisory warning about the risk of alcohol-related cancer.
Dr. Vivek Murthy issued the guidelines on Wednesday following research linking alcohol to at least seven types of cancer.

The advisory specifically notes that cancer can increase the risk of throat, liver, pharynx, esophagus, mouth, larynx (voice box) and colorectal cancer.

“Alcohol is an established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths per year in the United States – more than the 13,500 alcohol-related traffic deaths per year in the US – and yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk,” Murthy said in the advisory.
